Currently, about 70,000 cataract patients in Hong Kong are waiting for surgery in public hospitals. Some may have to wait up to four years or even longer. During this time, their vision may worsen, affecting their quality of life and increasing safely risks.

Inspired by the "Lifeline Express" operating model

The Lifeline Express hospital eye-train has provided free cataract surgery to over 250,000 underprivileged patients in mainland China since July 1997, helping them regain sight and improve their quality of life. This model has proven effective in areas with limited medical resources. Building on this experience, Lifeline Express will launch a similar program in Hong Kong in 2026 to help patients restore their vision sooner.

The "Lifeline Express - Free Cross-border Cataract Surgery Program" pilot scheme has now started. It is expected to provide free cataract surgery for 200 patients who have been waiting a long time in public hospitals and are facing financial difficulties.
